TOWN PLANNING (DEPARTMENT OF URBAN AND REGIONAL PLANNING)

Overview

Department of Planning envisions ensuring qualitative education with hands on experience in relevance to the Planning field. Planning has its roots in engineering, law, architecture, public health and the social sciences. Planners today combine design, analytical and communication skills to help communities manage change. Planning is both people-oriented and future- oriented. Its future is full of opportunities and challenges. In particular, technological advances in communications and computers are changing the shape and form of cities, and how planning for the future will take place.

Planners care about the future of our communities and want to contribute solutions to our pressing social, economic and environmental problems. They are in fact one of the key contributors to making urban and rural life workable, livable and prosperous. A planner works with communities to provide research, reasoned analysis and recommendations in urban, regional, environmental and social issues. Experts in public participation processes and conflict resolution, planners help develop solutions that are practical and effective. Planners link knowledge and action in ways that improve public and private development decisions, which affect people, places and the environment.

An education in urban planning will provide you with a solid grounding in the broad concepts and specific skills needed to excel as an urban planner in the public or private sector. Our industry-aligned curriculum and hands-on learning will outfit you with the expertise and confidence to achieve. A balance of research, history, theory, policy, economics, statistics, geospatial mapping, design, analysis, visual, verbal, and written communication round out the diverse tasks and skills that urban planners use on a daily basis. Students with previous experience, diploma and undergraduate degrees in Planning, Civil engineering, Architecture, sociology, economics, geography, population sciences, communications, marketing, public relations, art, English, history, political science, finance, and natural resources thrive in the Urban Planning profession.

The aim is to impart knowledge, skills and attitude needed to pursue a career in urban planning, research, policy making and management. It is essentially multi-disciplinary in nature – the subjects related to Urban and Regional Planning include Urban Economics, Sociology, Legislation, Development Theories, Politics, Transportation, Services, Housing, Landscape, etc.
